technically that is correct if we are using the Windows
behavior as the rule here.

That's another issue to deal with then.  We are completely
able to deal with disjoint domains so this should be fine.
But we rely heavily on working DNS so there may be a
subtle failure here.

You could send me the two logs from

  $ domainjoin-cli --log . --loglevel verbose join domain.com \
    Admin pasword > /tmp/join/log 2> /tmp/net_join.log
