Sure.  The lwopen plugin uses a local hashing mechanism
to map the SID to a uid or gid.  This means all installations
are consistent but not data is stored in AD.  Quick setup
and you are off and running.

The Enterprise plugin (also included in the Likewise Open
code base) has the knowledge of the Likewise Cells and
Forest  settings.  All data (uid, gid, home directory,
etc..) is stored in AD and retrieved from there.

It's mostly a difference of flexibility in defining the
uid/gid and account gets and central management of that
data.
